Richmond Online School serves a diverse, international community of learners. This Language Policy outlines our approach to the use of language across the school, our commitment to supporting multilingual students, and how we promote effective communication in a global learning environment.

2. Medium of Instruction

English is the primary language of instruction at Richmond Online School. All live lessons, course materials, assessments, and school communications are delivered in English. Students are expected to have a sufficient level of English proficiency to participate fully in their chosen courses. Where English is an additional language, we provide guidance during the admissions process to ensure students are placed at an appropriate level.

3. Support for Multilingual Learners

Richmond Online School recognises the value of multilingualism and actively supports students for whom English is not their first language. Support measures include:

• English as an Additional Language (EAL) support integrated into the curriculum where needed.
• Cambridge IGCSE English as an Additional Language (0472) offered as a formal qualification.
• Differentiated resources and additional time allowances where appropriate.
• Guidance from personal tutors on developing English language proficiency alongside academic subjects.

4. Foreign Language Provision

In addition to English, Richmond Online School offers the study of foreign languages as part of the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum. Currently available language courses include Spanish and Spanish as a Foreign Language. We encourage students to study a second language as part of a broad and balanced education.

5. Communication with Parents and Guardians

All official school communications, including reports, newsletters, and policy documents, are provided in English. Where families have limited English proficiency, Richmond Online School will make reasonable efforts to assist with communication, including the use of translation services where possible.
