Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know — if you can't find your answer here, get in touch with our admissions team.

You will study a selection of set texts chosen from the Cambridge prescribed list, typically including a novel, a collection of poetry, and a play (often Shakespeare). Your teacher will guide the text choices.

While reading is central, the course develops critical analysis, essay writing, and the ability to construct and defend arguments about literature. These are transferable skills valued across many subjects.

Assessment is through written papers that test knowledge of set texts and the ability to respond to unseen poetry and prose. Students write essays analysing character, theme, and language.

English Language and English Literature are separate qualifications. Most students take English Language as a core subject and add English Literature if they enjoy reading and literary analysis.
